Dear Friends and Citizens, Another year has come and gone since we came to you with our goal of owning a "Jaws of Life" rescue tool. Due to your generous response the rescue tool was put into service in July of 2000. This tool has been out to fire calls involving a motor vehicle accident 8 times in the past twelve months. We have also added an "Orion" rescue sled to our list of available equipment. This unique sled allows the department to rescue an injured person in the most remote area. It runs on wheels in the summer, and skis in the winter, providing four season rescue capabilities. It is pulled by ATV's or snowmobiles on loan from various firemen. A big THANK YOU goes out to the Backus American Legion for the generous donation that made this purchase possible. Another goal was also reached recently. We were finally able to purchase a new fire truck. This will replace the "old red" truck which will still be used if needed. This addition will allow the department to move safely and efficiently serve you. We are hoping to have the new truck in service by the end of August 2001. While we have made many improvements over the last year, we continue to need support from the people we serve. There is always something more that needs to be done. Training, safety equipment, supplies and truck maintenance are just a few. Again, we are asking for support from our community. Please think about donating to a volunteer, local organization this year, $50, $25, $10, or even $1.00, no amount is too small and is greatly appreciated. Every dollar received will help a Backus Fire Fighter safely assist you when you need it most. The Backus Fire Department proudly serves the City of Backus, and the townships of Bull Moose, Blind Lake, Deerfield, McKinley, Pine River, Ponto and Powers.
